Final Post!

Hi families,

This will be my final post of the 2016 - 2017 school year!  May begins tomorrow and we are still going full swing in kindergarten.

In math we are just beginning tens and ones.  We will explore tens and ones in relation to the teen numbers.  For example, thirteen is one group of ten and three ones.  This will be our final math module.  Over the summer I encourage you to work with your child on this concept as well as addition and subtraction.  You do not need to teach them with a pen and paper, but practice it with chalk, turn it into a game or look at numbers/shapes around our community.

I also encourage you to join a summer reading program through the Brookfield or Lyons library.  We will be having library presentations the last week of school.  Read books to your child, but also have your child read to you.  All of the friends are leaving kindergarten reading!  The more you read this summer, the more prepared your child will be for first grade.

Be sure to check your child's folder throughout these last days as important information will be sent home regarding various end of the year events.

Thanks for all you do,

Miss Berry

ABC Countdown

Hi Families,

It is hard to believe that end of the school year is in sight.  Last week we began the school-wide ABC countdown and had a great time with letters A, B and C.  Carlos won the paper Airplane contest, which all the friends had a blast doing.  When we made the airplanes with our fourth grade reading buddies our classroom was far from quiet!  On B day the friends did two brain breaks to Ms. Schumann's music and Friday, for Crazy hair day, the looks were unforgettable.  Tomorrow we will be having a Dance party for the letter D.

As the friends participate in these fun end of the events please continue to check their folders for any additional end of the year events.  At the start of May you will receive information regarding Stepping Up to First Grade and later in the month, Field Day.

See you tomorrow,

Miss Berry

Leprechaun Traps

Although the leprechaun traps were very clever (and absolutely adorable) we were unable to catch a tricky little leprechaun this St. Patrick's Day!

In dreams of catching a leprechaun, we wrote about what would happen if we did catch a leprechaun.  The friends had some really great ideas, but I think the favorite two were:

* Take his gold
* Use him to scare my family

Here is a picture of the great work!

Happy St. Patty's Day!

End of the Third Quarter

Hi Families,

The fourth quarter begins tomorrow and it's hard to believe the end of the school year is in sight!  The friends have all been tested on their third quarter academics and the results will be used to determine report card grades.  Report cards will be sent home shortly.  If you have any concerns or questions, please see me after school or send me an email.

During this last quarter the friends will continue to strengthen their reading and writing skills.  They will also work on addition fluency and subtraction.  Please reinforce all of these topics at home.

Special events this week include:
* Book Fair on Tuesday
* Leprechaun Traps due Thursday

See you tomorrow,

Miss Berry

Great Learning in Kindergarten

Hi Families,

Here's what's happening in Kindergarten!!

Reading: The friends are all beginning to read and write independently.  The friends are receiving small group instruction based on their reading level.  Most of the beginning books focus on sight words and unfamiliar words that connect to the picture.  Please review the paper books that have been sent home all year long.  These books will help your child with fluency.  The next two weeks will focus on our last vowel sound /u/.  We will practice writing CVC words that have /u/ in the middle, for example: rug, cut.

Math: The friends have done a fantastic job on addition.  We have learned to write addition sentences in two ways: 2 + 4 = 6 and 4 + 2 = 6.  We are also trying to write problems in reverse, 6 = 4 + 2.  This last way can be challenging.  Our vocabulary words for addition are "add" and "equals".  Our Origo curriculum is also incorporating 3D shapes.

Social Studies/Science: Dental Health has been our focus.  This past week we placed two eggs (our teeth) in a cup of soda and a cup of water for 24 hours.  The experiment helped us determine what happens to our teeth if we drink soda.  We spoke about how it is ok to drink soda in moderation and for special occasions, but we must eat and drink foods that help our teeth get and stay strong.  We will finish with dental health this week and then begin working on our Wide Mouth Frog production.

Second Step (Social Emotional): We worked on calming down and being patient.  Families, you still have the opportunity to participate in One School, One Book.  The friends LOVE answering the daily Stuart Little questions.  If your family is participating please be sure to send in your selfie!

See everyone Monday!

Second Step Week

Hi Families,

Tomorrow is the start of Lincoln's annual Second Step Week. It is going to be a very busy week in kindergarten so please be sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats breakfast every day.  During this week, as well as for the upcoming weeks, your family will be invited to participate in One School, One Book. You will get more information regarding this event and I hope you take advantage of it!

Valentine's Day parties are Tuesday and only Room Parents are able to attend. All children may bring valentines to pass out to their friends. Be sure to send your child with a mailbox to collect his/her goodies.

Spring photos are on Thursday and all children will take a picture regardless of if you choose to purchase it or not. Make sure to pack gym shoes for P.E.

Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine.

Here is what is coming up this week:

* Math - 3D shapes and addition.  Please remember that we are currently using the word "add" instead of plus.

Enjoy your evening,
